On Football: The Inner-Game - Improving Performance

by Sven-Göran Eriksson (Karlskoga), Willi Railo, and Hĺkan Matson Carlton Books 2001

On Football

On Football

Bob Rating: B (... enjoyment 4/5, though.)

Yes, there's not much by way of Seventies football nostalgia here. There is a shot of Pelé, but only a fleeting reference to Degerfors. Indeed there's more interest in Seventies tennis ikon, Björn Borg, though it's not hard to see why. Björn was not only Swedish, but the King of Cool on in his sporting arena, and that's what this book is all about.

Sven-Göran's role in the book is often to provide working, real life examples to the teachings of top sports psychologist, Willi Railo - who does the majority of the talking. The book is effectively a self-help of sports psychology with lots of glossy photos, an easy reading style, and end of lesson summaries tailing each chapter.

'On Football' insists that the lessons are transferable out of sport, but more importantly, out of World class sport, which the examples are taken from. The authors get dangerously close to name dropping as they draw on their experience with World beating athletes and Italian Championship winning footballers. I was tempted to think, OK this'll work for Ingrid Kristiansen, but what about 16 stone Bob from Leeds (if there is one).

Nevertheless, I loved it, I have to say. By the end of each section I was off imagining myself beating Dave Beckham in a corners contest, and just itching to meet him to prove I'll beat him - the over-aggressive, fleeing non-barrier-breaking goal setter !

By the end of the book I had adopted the religion of Sven-Göran. He had me believing I could take on the World in anything I put my mind to, and as the guru concludes,'The power of the mind is incredible'.

Not only that, but I got the book cheap in W.H.Smith - even cheaper with clubpoints, so get it while the offer is still on and don't fork out the cover price of 12 pounds 99p whatever you do ! It is also available on the web at WHSmith.co.uk

Bobby Moore with the World Cup

Bobby Moore with the World Cup

This is a must-buy 'Special Collectors Edition'. It includes 'The 50 Greatest Football Photos of all Time', and it's not an understated claim. Name a picture from football that you've always liked and you can be sure it's here. That great shot of Dave Makay grabbing a protesting Billy Bremner by the shirt, a shirt swapping Bobby Moore and Pelé at Mexico '70 (see full size Picture)...

Pelé and Bobby Moore

... a young Bobby Charlton showing his skills back in the street he grew up in, a packed Hillsborough Kop in 1970, Geoff Hurst's fourth goal in the '66 final (see hatrick goal) , Cruyff playing cards, Sir Alf Ramsey at the 'animal' - Argentina match in '66, Sammy Nelson's moonie...

Sammy Nelson's bum

... Best in '67 heading the ball in a contest loaded with a gathering of Man U and Arsenal's greatest ever players, THE Banks save in Mexico '70, Peter Shilton beaten by 'the Hand of God', a sneeky Charlie George at an Arsenal photocall in '74, more Bremner, Shankly greeting the Liverpool fans, Bobby Moore with the FA Cup in '64 and the World Cup in '66 ... what a magazine...

Not only that the first two pictures mentioned above are even shown on the cover - my hero, Billy Bremner on the cover !

As if that were not enough, there is then a feature exposing myths in foootball, which is worth a read. Along with it is an excuse for a couple more pictures of George Best, and Pelé's 1,000th goal. This last point was discussed at Yahoo! Clubs sixtiesandseventiessoccer - also see Pelé's 1,000th goal.

But next greatest of all (after a magazine Billy Bremner count of 5) for Bob's 70-71 pages is a full page devoted to a scene from 70-71 itself. It shows Bertie Mee with the double trophies, exposing the myth,' Spurs always win trophies in years ending in a one!'

Indeed, another article to feature a picture of Billy is one about the Leeds United team in the (44) days of Brian Clough's management . It concerns managers teams wouldn't want back I would list all the relevant managers, but it does read a bit like a who's who of Bob's 70-71 pages, so I'll duck that one. Interestingly Alan Ball only succeeded in getting the vote at Blackpool, Manchester City and Stoke City ... so Portsmouth were more unhappy with someone else at least...

FourFourTwo August 2001, no.84. See 'FourFourTwo'

Bob Rating: BBB

It starts well with the cover having a picture of Michael Owen (Terry Owen's son) promoting a five page exclusive interview with him, and Brian Clough's name in lights advertising his regular column.

A photos feature includes a recent picture of Franz Beckenbauer manfully attempting to drink a twenty gallon glass of beer.

A classic photos feature includes a shot of Pelé signing autographs at the '66 World Cup, and England celebrating the win afterwards.

The obituaries include Ronnie Allen, Denis Gillespie, Didi and Urruti.

'Crazy, crazy nights' is an article about classic games by British teams in Eurpoe, including Hamburg 1 Cardiff City 1 in 1968.

But the magazine's highlight is their regular 'Action Replay' feature. This month the subject is inspired by the recent death of Bobby Murdoch (Celtic), and covers the classic Bhoys of '69, the last time Celtic won the treble prior to last season. It's a great story with 5 pages of great photos to illustrate it.

Bob Rating: B

The opening page is Michael Owen's advert for 'Sporties' and Frank Lampard (Frank Lampard Senior's son) is plugged on the cover for a feature, which includes a large photo in an item on big summer transfers.

Apart from that there's an interesting article on players that played for Manchester United that one doesn't associate with the club - which includes George Graham and a very young Barry Fry. Walter Winterbottom, the future England manager was another surprising one.

Leeds Leeds Leeds July 2001

Bob Rating: BB

There's an excellent article with Mike O'Grady (Wolverhampton Wanderers), who was a winger for Don Revie at Leeds United before moving to Wolves. Hopefully, in the fulness of time, I'll bring this article to the site.

England's World Cup match on June 11, 1970 versus Czechoslovakia gets a mention because it was the one of two occasions Leeds United had three England internationals in the same team, Jack Charlton, Terry Cooper and Allan Clarke. It was Jack's last and Allan's first game for England - Allan scored a penaltly. October 17, 1973, Allan Clarke, Norman Hunter and Paul Madeley all played against Poland - but that's best forgotten, eh?!

This was only mentioned because Sven-Göran Eriksson chose four Leeds players aagainst Mexico this year on 25 May - Nigel Martyn, Rio Frdinand, Alan Smith and Danny Mills - though only 2 were ever on the pitch at the same time !

Gary Edward's regular article 'Paint it White' has a piece on Don Revie's funeral, as 26 May was the 12th anniversary of his death. There's an unusual picture of Don wearing the 1972 Leeds United kit to illustrate it.

But disappointingly, outside of adverts I made it a big ZERO on the Billy Bremner count, now where's my copy of 'Total Football' ...
