About Bob 70-71

- Know any others ??! Let me know and I'll include them on this page.

July 2001

Helen Keen sent me this slightly unusual 'Where are they now ?' information...

Martin Peters' Cortina

Cortina 1600 - one of 30 produced for Mexico 1970

Cortina 1600 produced for Mexico 1970

Helen writes

"The cars' registration numbers GWC 1 to 30H were Ermine White, and given to each squad member in the 1970 Mexico World Cup for one year. Each squad member was then given the option to extend ownership.

I have visited Martin Peter's Ex- car (Number 5 of 30!)which is almost fully restored and looking great!

Don't worry if you can't find anything! I will keep you updated on my search progress!! I imagine most of them have been scrapped, and only a few survive, but I am hoping to track down as many survivng ones as possble!!!"

If you have any information I can hand on to Helen, please do E-mail me

Special thanks to Steven Tallents who wrote the following two emails, though the players are generally not from the 70-71 season, it makes interesting reading .

Steven writes:

Peter Swan: I know that Peter Swan is not technically a 70's player but he did make a comeback in the 70's. Peter is currently running the Old Mill Pub in Chesterfield and a nicer man you could not meet. Get him talking about the old days and he rhymes of the stories. They are excellent to listen to as he did play for England over 20 times.

He told me about the time when the current England squad was asked to play Tottenham in the Charity Shield. Spurs had won the League and Cup double so could not play themselves. The FA decided that they would be called a Football X1 so that the cheap skates would not have to pay for an England Cap. Peter said that he got £10.00 for the day.

On his wall he has Pele and Di Stefano's shirt which he swopped with them after the game. He still has a smile even after the way he was so badly treated and welcomes anyone into his Pub

Bob's reply: How excellent, thanks for that.   Peter is very rare in having played before and after 70-71, and hence not strictly speaking qualifying for the site. I always wondered if there would be someone with that type of career. The break in career was due to being banned after a bribery scandal.

Steven:

Bob, The pub may just be called The Mill and its just off the town centre in a town called Brinnington. I have hundreds of memories that ex-players have recited to me. Rochdale Art Gallery are interested in doing some kind of exhibition nearer the end of the year.

Ron Rafferty of Grimsby Town wrote to me today, his most memorable moments were: 1, Scoring 6 goals in one game against Lincoln whilst in the 2nd Division. 2, On his debut for Portsmouth v Sunderland in 1954, Pompey were in the 1st Division then. Before the game the players were presented to Field Marshall Montgomery who was the Club President. Ron had just come out of the Army and to him that was a special moment in hi career.

Clarrie Williams: Also from Grimsby Town, Goalkeeper Clarrie Williams wrote:   1, When Grimsby clinched the last Northern League game as winners, Clarrie only let in 29 goals in 46 games, which is still a record at Grimsby. 2, The 1956 Winning Team were paid £10.00 per week plus £2.00 win bonus. No extra payment for winning the league in front of crowds of 20,000 plus.

Freddie Hill (Manchester City) Finally managed to track down Freddie Hill, Bolton Wanderers and England and got an autograph from him.

John McAlle (Wolverhampton Wanderers) of Wolves sent me a nice letter, he wrote "you never miss the water until the well runs dry", he sure does miss playing.

Terry Naylor: (Tottenham Hotspur) Yesterday got a letter and a signed picture from Terry Naylor who played over 250 games for Tottenham.

World Cup Stars: One of my best moments would be about two years ago, I got to meet Lucien Laurent who played for France in the 1930 World Cup and actually scored the first ever goal in a World Cup Final Game. He told me that it took them 3 weeks to sail to Uruguay for the games.

Michel Platini helped me track down Just Fontaine, who hold the record for 13 goals scored in the World Cup Finals.

Last year I managed to track down Pietro Rava who played for Italy when they won the World Cup in 1938.

David Hamilton : I came across an ex-player, David Hamilton who played for Blackburn Rovers, Burnley and Wigan. He told me fascinating stories of running out before a full house at St James Park. How Phil Neal (Northampton), then manager of Bolton wanted him to join them. Then one day he gave me a signed photo and one of his "Man of the Match" medals. David is now coach at Rochdale.

Are there any players that you are trying to find? I may be able to help. I hope that I have not bored you to death!!!!   Speak to you soon   Steven.

PS I have just started a website, see   Football 57

Les Green (Derby County) I asked Nuneaton Borough's official website where Les is now and they answered that he was last seen at the company Ryland Coventry.
