May 2003

Loose Ends...

Sometimes I spot an update put it on a Post-It, and forget all about it.Well, here's a little collection of such notes to update the odd profile here and there...

Terry Burton (Arsenal Youth) Terry is now the first team coach at Division One at Watford. This site last knew of Terry after he was sacked as Wimbledon's manager last season. After a hip operation, Terry joined manager Ray Lewington at Watford of Division One on 2 September 2002. This season Watford finished 13th.

See Burton officially begins work

Ray Mathias (Tranmere Rovers) Ray missed out on being Tranmere Rovers' most played League player by just 28 games. The record is held by Harold Bell with 595, who played a record of 401 consecutive League matches in setting the total.

Ray was a one club man signing for Tranmere in 1964 and playing until the 1984-85 season, clocking up 567 League matches scoring just 6 goals in doing so.

On 6 September 2002, he took over as manager from Dave Watson, who was sacked before the season began. Ray had previously been manager of Wigan Athletic from 1998-99. This season Tranmere Rovers missed out on a Play-off place in Division Two by just one point, and were 7th in the League.

Kenny Hibbitt (Wolverhampton Wanderers) A 'where were they now?' one, this, but I see from reading the excellent The NonLeagueDaily.com, that Kenny was sacked as manager of Doctor Martins Premier League side, Hednesford Town at the end of last season (10 May 2002). This came in spite of having saved the club from relegation for a second successsive season.

Barry Powell, who was a youth player at Wolves around the same time as Kenny, but whom I cannot confirm was a 70-71 player, was his assistant and was sacked at the same time.

Earlier in the season he had got help from another fellow youth team player, John Richards (Wolverhampton Wanderers). John is described as a managing director and helped out the club on the financial side in an advisory role !

Luiz Felipe Scolari (Clube Esportivo Aimoré)

I have long been aware that the 2002 Brazilian World Cup Winning Coach, Scolari, has had a rightful place on the site. Recently he has been in the limelight again as Portugal's national team coach. This information is from Selecção Portuguesa.com- Portuguese National Team.

Career (Player):
Clube Esportivo Aimoré (São Leopoldo) (1967-73), Caixas (1973-79), Novo Hamburgo (1980),  Juv. Caxias do Sul (1980-81), CSA Maceio (1981)

Career (Coach):
CSA Maceio (82), Juv. Caxias do Sul (83),  Brasil Pelotas (83), Al Shahab (Saudi Arabia 1984-85), Góias (86), Grémio de Porto Alegre (87), Al Qadisiya (Kuwait/88-90), Curitiba (90), Criciuma (91), Al-Qadisiya (Kuwait, 92),  Grémio de Porto Alegre (93-96), Jubilo Iwata (Japan, 96), Curitiba, Goias, Palmeiras (98-2000) Cruzeiro (2000-01), Kuwaiti National Team (1990) and Brazil (2002)

Honour( Coach)
Taça Libertadores: 1995 and 99,  Taça Mercosur: 1998, Brazilian Championship: 1996, Brazilian Cup: 1991, 1994 and 1998, South American Cup Winners Cup: 1996, Gulf Cup with Kuwait: 1999, World Cup Champion: 2002

Career as Brazilian National Team Coach: 18 Wins, 1 Ties, 5 Losses

Eric Winstanley (Barnsley) Eric is now involved in national team management. On 7 May 2002 he took over the St Kitts and Nevis national side, and according to one site I read the side has won a West Indies Cup twice, but I cannot confirm this. The official website has a frustrating lack of useful information, see http--www.sknfa.kn-

Peter Withe (Southport) On the continuing subject of International coaches, Peter has most recently turned up as manager of the Thailand national side. Technically, Peter was at Smith Coggins at the start of the 70-71 season, but as I don't know who they are, I'm listing him under Southport to whom he signed in November 1970.

See Teams - The Thailand National Team

Terry Cooper (Notts County) Imagine my surprise as I'm reading Tony Adams' biography, when Terry's name crops up. Terry, not to be confused with the Leeds United player of the same name, was one of his prison guards at Cheltenham prison. Tony served his portion of a nine month sentence handed out to him for drunk driving in 1991. The full reference reads:

'The screws were good to me, especially a guy named Terry Cooper who had once played left back for Lincoln City, and another called Peter, they helped me get fit'.

P.104 'Addicted' Tony Adams with Ian Ridley. Collins Willow, London (paperback edition) 1999.

(Note, someone else reported Terry to me, too, I'll add your credit when I find the email).
