| Bob 70-71 | May 2000 NewsThis is the latest news of all the players who appeared in the 1970-71 FKS Publishers Ltd Wonderful World of Soccer Stars Album 31 May, 2000 They Called Him Nobby Stiles, Nobby Stiles.(Manchester United) Nobby's agent must be on a bonus. His face has been quite frequently about since his New Year's Honour. a) Coronation Street. I'm not a fan, but I overheard at the end of an episode last week that Nobby will be visiting the Official Coronation Street website this week ... early half-hearted attempts to find the site have proved unsuccessful, so I'll have to get back to you on that one. b) Royal Mail. 'Dad, you can be Stiles, I'll be Shearer' declares the latest poster campaign for the Royal Mail. I was wizzing along at 30mph at the time, but I gather someone intended sending Subbuteo figures through the post to their Dad. c) www.thewalkoffame.com As reported by 'Total Football' Nobby was also one of the Man U stars offering his feet to the Walk of Fame Carling Repeat. I see that CarlingBlack Label have revived their advert about England before and after the invention of football. This ends with a cameo performance by a medievally draped Ron Atkinson.. Frank Interview Whilst surfing the football sites generally I came across this interview with our very own Huddersfield Town star, Frank Worthington. See Sports.com - Four Corners guest celebrity Frank Worthington. Brian update : Football365 has the following piece on Brian Kidd's appointment at Leeds BRIAN KIDD is relishing a fresh challenge after agreeing to become Leeds United's director of youth development. The former Blackburn manager, who helped develop Manchester United's current crop of England stars at Old Trafford, is hoping to make a similar impact at Elland Road. Kidd, who has been recharging his batteries since parting company with Blackburn in the autumn, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: ''I'm delighted to be taking up such an exciting challenge.'' Kidd, 53 yesterday, added: ''I have known David O'Leary since he was a 16-year-old with Arsenal. He was a fine player and is now a manager who is clearly going places in the game. ''I was deeply impressed with the chairman's (Peter Ridsdale) ambitions for the club in respect of future development. There will be no empire building. It will be nice to create a seamless relationship between the youngsters and the first team squad at a club which has already demonstrated that it is prepared to give youth a chance. ''This is going to be a very exciting season for Leeds, with the Champions League and all that, and I can't wait to get my teeth into it.'' 24 May, 2000 Charlie George For anyone (unlike myself) who has Sky Sports 3, at 11pm 'Brian Moore interviews ...' tonight is with Charlie George. 23 May, 2000 Sir Roger Good to hear Roger Hunt (Bolton Wanderers) on Alan Brazil's Talk Sport radio programme earlier this week. Roger inspired open awe in some listeners, and in the bits I heard, was giving his opinion on who should play for England in Euro 2000. F.A.Cup Coverage Well done to Chelsea for winning the Cup for the third time - they were, of course the Cup holders for thier first time at the beginning of the 1970-71 season. In the U.K. I.T.V. had sole terrestial rights to the television coverage causing the BBC's 'Grandstand' to be cancelled for one of it's first times since 70-71 due to lack of sport to cover (Channel 4 had the Test cricket) ! Ron Atkinson was on hand to give expert opinion, and did a good job by all accounts.Terry Venables (QPR) was in the studio which he had every right to be as an both an ex-Chelsea player, and one of the few people to match Gianluca Vialli's achievement of winning the competition both as a player and a manager (Kenny Dalglish (Celtic squad), and George Graham have done so also). Radio coverage was also criticised as being dull. Don't tell our friends at the www.seasiders.net as Jimmy Armfield (Blackpool) was one of the expert opinion providers there. Advert Latest. And more on Big Ron who is putting his name to 'Ron's 24 to watch'. These credit card size and shaped cd roms of 24 players likely to appear in Euro 2000 are an official Euro 2000 product. Ron will be providing the narration on the player profiles which include photos, factfiles, and footage of the player. You can even enter the on-line draw to receive a commemorative collection signed and presented by Ron at Competition. They cost 2 pounds 39 pence and should be available now from Asda and WH Smith. Total Sport gives them a pretty good review. See Serious Sportz - Soccer. 15 May, 2000 Glentoran Greats Whilst discovering all about the Irish League I had a good look around their official site (Glentoran Football Club, Belfast, Northern Ireland) and discovered a couple of great stories from players in the World of Soccer Stars album, well worth a read. Terry Conroy (Stoke City) was the hero of the club's 1966 Cup victory, and Tommy Jackson (Everton) had success both as a player and as a manager. See Terry Conroy - 1966 Irish Cup Final and Tommy Jackson 14 May, 2000 Bradford 1 Barnet 0 'The Sun' report that Rodney Marsh (QPR) is to stick to his word about saying that if bradford City survive in the premiership, he'll get his head shaved. "I'm a man of my word and I will be going up there to have my hair cut. I would never back out of something like this. Bradford have done a great job to stay in the Premiership." Rodders said. Chairman Geoffrey Richmond will provide a barber's chair so that our Rodney can have it done in the centre circle at Valley Parade ! The stunt hopes to raise money for Bradford Burns Unit. (Report from Football365 daily newspaper). 13 May, 2000 For no particular reason I've added photos of Alan Gilzean (Spurs), Bobby Graham (Liverpool), Kidd Returns Leeds United have signed up the jobless Brian Kidd (Manchester United) to oversee their youth team. See Leeds United FMC - The Official Web Site 12 May, 2000 Sir Bobby Aims to Win Vote ! 'The Times' newspaper today gives the reason Sir Bobby has been nominated for the first 'Top Bob' Award. It seems his efforts to get the World Cup Finals staged in England in 2006 have gone well and due to the system of voting which eliminates the losing country after each round of voting, may just come out in England's favour. See Bobby Charlton in The Times Features. Oliver Holt reports and The Times Football England's 2006 bid seals new support See also FA 2006 Diving Marsh After the all-Spanish European Cup game where Barcelonia lost to Valencia with a 2-1 victory (er...) ITV chose to run a completely unrelated (honest) sports programme all about dirty tactics. In this Rodney Marsh (QPR) proudly told us that in one season he got 14 penalties - largely by diving in the box ! Proud cheat, Rodney claimed he was one of the pioneers of this art-form in England. Moore Best and Marsh Talking of Rodney Marsh (QPR)- he is currently starring in adverts for Sky Digital. Rodney's buddy, George Best is also involved in a related ads campaign. Meanwhile, the Corinthian figure of Bobby Moore holding the World Cup is the central picture on e-bays magazine adverts.
Bobby Moore 7 May, 2000 Thanks once again to Ian Corry who has provided two more images which can be found at Billy Bremner and Bobby Charlton John Hollins' (Chelsea) Swansea City, got the better of Rotherham in the Division Three Championship clash. The team went 1-0 up with two minutes to go, and though a last minute penalty did level the scores, it was Swansea who went into the tie only needing a draw. Well done John ! For quite the most thorough match report imaginable try SWANSEA CITY FC - Rotherham (a). This site devotes a page to every muttering John says, it's a great, see SWANSEA CITY FC - Holl(er)ins. Promoted ! Joe Royle's (Everton) Manchester City have finally returned to the Premiership. Things looked dodgy when Ipswich Town were leading and City were 1-0 down to Blackburn Rovers, but they came back to be 4-1 victors. City go up in the runners-up place Todd Returns Colin Todd (Sunderland) who was so cruelly sacked by Bolton Wanderers earlier in the season, is the new manager at Swindon Town. The yo-yo-like Robins sacked their manager Jimmy Quinn after the team were relegated to Division Two this season. See Football365 Always a good sign of a club struggling is looking at how their webpages are doing. Swindon Town's official webpage was last updated in 1998 ! Perhaps they could raise money for a new player by selling the URL. See Swindon Town Football Club !!! Further May 2000 news can be found at the following ... |
